Livelihoods & Food Security

Livelihoods & Food Security

As Qurban Africa our focus is to provide nutritious food to prevent loss of life by improving the immune systems of individuals and to contribute to the rehabilitation of food and market systems.

We advocate for livelihood programs that protect, and strengthen individuals’ and households’ capabilities to earn them a living.

Qurban Africa’s livelihoods and food security programs are designed to tackle the fundamental causes of hunger by addressing problems of production, storage access, and income.

Short-Term Programme Objectives

Our short-term program target those who are highly food insecure. Most scenarios arise from both man-made contribution (i.e. war and conflicts) and natural disasters (i.e. drought, earthquakes)
Short-term food security programs are divided into two types: emergency programs, involves providing food aid, medical and agricultural supplies to casualties and refugees; and protection programs, which distribute basic food and food supplements to vulnerable populations that comprises of children, the elderly and the mentally ill.

Medium-Term Programme Objectives

Our medium-term programs focuses on the root causes of food insecurity and to bring about sustainable poverty reduction and nutrition outcomes. Programs focus on three main sectors:

Qurban Africa agriculture programs focuses on improving household food availability by increasing basic food and livestock production, nurturing small and large scale farming, improving storage facilities and investing in new farming techniques and infrastructure.

In income generation, we aim to improve access to food by increasing non-farm income and savings methods. To achieve this program, we engage in microfinance programs and increased cash crop production.

Health program seeks to improve an individual’s immune system ability to fight against diseases. Health programs revolve around: child survival, maternal and child health, improved sanitation infrastructure and HIV and AIDS education.

Long-term Programme Objectives

Long-term programs focus on building a foundation for sustainable food security. These programs seek to change the conditions under which long-term hunger and poverty develop and persist. Programs focus on areas such as:

In education we seek to develop human capital by providing literacy and math skills for adults, encouraging school enrollment and attendance among children, especially girls, and by improving educational infrastructure.

Qurban Africa promotes agricultural sustainability through projects in soil and water conservation, reforestation, and improved agricultural practices.

Qurban Africa promotes justice through peace and reconciliation programming.

How We Do It

Focused & Long-Reaching

The objectives ofQurban Africa food security programming are twofold: to alleviate immediate hunger through increased consumption and to encourage sustainable food security by changing the conditions under which hunger develops and persists.

Integration

We integrate our food security and livelihoods programming with our activities to restore shelters and settlements, improve water and sanitation, protect highly vulnerable populations, and help communities become more resilient to future disasters.

Empowerment

Qurban Africa looks beyond addressing immediate needs with food, water and shelter. Our response to an emergency often includes paying residents in cash or food in exchange for help with reconstruction. The work that community members do can help mitigate the effects of the next disaster—whether it be war, food shortages or severe weather. Cash-for-work supports local employment and income.
